Uber & Momenta are bringing robotaxis to Germany in 2026

Big news for mobility fans: Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle startup Momenta are teaming up to launch robotaxis in Munich starting in 2026. That’s right, self-driving Ubers could be cruising around Bavaria in just a couple of months.

Munich isn’t just any random city either. Uber says it chose the Bavarian capital because of its rich engineering history and strong automotive ecosystem. As Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi put it: “Germany has shaped the global automotive industry for more than a century, and now Munich will help shape the future with autonomous vehicles.”

Safety drivers first, robots later

Don’t expect completely driverless cars right away. In the beginning, each vehicle will still have a safety operator on board to monitor the ride and step in if needed. Over time, the goal is to move toward Level 4 autonomy, where cars can handle everything themselves in specific conditions.

Uber’s growing AV network

This Munich launch is part of Uber’s bigger global push into autonomous mobility:

  • In the U.S., Uber already offers rides with Waymo’s robotaxis in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta.

  • In the Middle East, Uber is working with Momenta, WeRide, and Pony.ai, robotaxi rides are already live in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, with Dubai next on the list.

  • In London, Uber and U.K. startup Wayve are preparing for Level 4 public road trials.

Fun fact: Uber currently works with 20 AV partners worldwide, covering ride-hailing, delivery, and freight. Those partnerships are already clocking 1.5 million trips a year.

Meet Momenta

Founded in 2016 in Beijing, Momenta is one of China’s earliest and strongest AV startups. They’ve been testing self-driving cars since 2018 and already provide advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in collaboration with automakers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. In fact, more than 400,000 cars on the road today already use Momenta’s tech.

The Munich rollout would be Momenta’s first European robotaxi service. But before launch, they’ll need approval from German regulators including strict safety certifications and geo-fenced zone validations.

A competitive field

Uber isn’t the only player eyeing Europe’s AV market. Rival Lyft announced last year that it’s teaming up with China’s Baidu to roll out robotaxis in Germany and the U.K. starting as early as 2025. So yes, the race for Europe’s self-driving future is officially on.
