Autolog, a unique approach
on autonomous logistics

The AutoLog project is a partnership between three industry leaders: Stalem, which specializes in bicycle-based waste management and last-mile delivery; Neolix, a global AI-powered autonomous logistics solutions company; and Espaces-Mobilités, a Brussels-based consultancy expert in mobility strategies and autonomous mobility projects. Together, these organizations combine their unique strengths in logistics, autonomous and mobility to drive the initiative forward.

A unique and transversal approach

The AutoLog project is a partnership between three industry leaders: Stalem, which specializes in bicycle-based waste management and last-mile delivery; Neolix, a provider of autonomous delivery systems; and Espaces-Mobilités, a Brussels-based consultancy expert in mobility strategies and autonomous mobility projects. Together, these organizations combine their unique strengths in logistics, autonomous and mobility to drive the initiative forward.

EU-funded
project

 The project is funded by EIT Urban Mobility, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, committed to accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility. This initiative is part of Mobility Masterclass, a comprehensive training programme launched in 2022 that has already attracted over 500 participants on innovative topics such as Mobility Data, Urban Logistics, Digital Twins or Autonomous Mobility.

About the project

The project consists in a capacity building process to evaluate the potential of deploying autonomous vans for waste management and last-mile delivery in the centre of Brussels

Autonomous vehicles

The delivery service will be operated by Level 4 autonomous delivery vehicles supplied by the manufacturer Neolix

Delivering shops
and collecting waste

The project will adress two disctinct use cases: last mile delivery and waste collection 

Service to the southern
part of the Pentagon

The project area is the southern part of the Pentagon (Brussels) from Bruxelles-Midi station to the shops nearby the pedestrian zone

A 12 months project

The project starts in november 2026 for 12 months with the ambition to extend both the duration and the service area

Multidimensional objectives

The project aims to establish Brussels as a hub for autonomous logistics innovation, while simultaneously shaping regulatory frameworks and assessing socio-economic and environmental impacts.

Training program

Next to the deployment of the vehicles, a training program will be proposed to all stakeholders in the Brussels Region

An itinerary deserving the south of Brussels

A 2 km route between the STALEM warehouse (Gare du Midi) and the southern end of the Pentagon to deliver shops from that area and collect waste, in continuity with STALEM core activities.

Why autonomous logistics ?

Mobility transformation

Autonomous logistics vehicles represent a unique opportunity to transform urban supply chains and freight infrastructure. By reducing reliance on traditional delivery vans and heavy trucks - major contributors to traffic congestion, double-parking, and emissions - they enable cities to reclaim valuable curbside space and oversized loading zones.

These driverless technologies have also the potential to significantly improve road safety, ease traffic bottlenecks during peak hours, and eliminate curbside friction. Beyond dense commercial centers, autonomous logistics solutions deliver flexible "last-mile" goods movement and automated door-to-door fulfillment, offering reliable, low-cost delivery services to previously underserved residential neighborhoods and remote communities.

By integrating into a broader vision of smart urban planning, autonomous logistics could also enable continuous, 24/7 off-peak delivery cycles. By shifting goods movement to low-traffic hours, these fleets make urban distribution truly seamless, universally accessible, and environmentally sustainable.

Anticipate the potential challenges

However, autonomous logistics may also pose challenges to our regions if this technological transition does not support shared freight networks and consolidated distribution. If autonomous driving systems are deployed in an uncoordinated manner, they risk multiplying underutilized delivery vehicles on our streets, increasing empty-mile trips and further clogging urban curbsides.

The coming years undoubtedly will mark a historic turning point in the field of autonomous logistics with the commercial scaling of major global players - primarily Chinese innovators - deploying driverless freight and delivery services at scale. All these reasons have prompted logistics operators, urban planners, and project partners to join forces to learn together and ensure that Belgium is ready to support this freight revolution.

Self-driving technologies

Self-driving technologies represent a revolutionary leap in automotive engineering, aiming to transform transportation by enabling vehicles to operate autonomously. At their core, these advanced systems integrate a complex array of hardware and software components to perceive, understand, and navigate the world without human intervention. There are six levels of autonomous driving, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International. These levels categorize the degree to which a vehicle can drive itself, ranging from no automation to full automation.

About the technology

The vehicles are equipped with sensors that composes the brain of the self-driving system. AI algorithms then process the massive amounts of data collected by the sensors in real-time.

CAMERAS

provide visual information, allowing the system to identify lane markings, traffic signs, traffic lights, and other vehicles and pedestrians. They are essential for object recognition and classification

LIDARS

use pulsed laser light to measure distances, creating highly detailed 3D maps of the environment. Lidar is particularly effective for precise object detection and mapping.

About Espaces-Mobilités

Espaces-Mobilités is a specialized consultancy firm dedicated to transforming urban transport systems through the implementation of innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. The company has been involved in the development of urban logistics strategies for the Brussels Capital Region since 2010 (Plan marchandises, Mobil2040, Regional Mobility Plan). Throughout its history, the company has been a key partner involved in the vast majority of autonomous vehicle projects and developments across Belgium. Their expertise in navigating complex integration challenges was demonstrated in 2025, when they successfully managed the deployment of two WeRide robobuses in Leuven.
